KATANGA PROJECT

Ghetto Program

ABOUT THE KATANGA PROJECT

Every Saturday the SAI team has a ghetto program in Katanga. Katanga is a slum that is heavily populated with mud wattle houses of very substandard size. The slum is defined by miserable poverty with low income earners. It has inadequate access to safe water, lack of toilets due to lack of enough land. Here the situation is worse than a typical rural African village. At the beginning of the program our volunteer workers play with the kids for a long time. They bring along balls, hula hoops, occasionally some coloring books, or other toys. Since the young ghetto residents normally do not have these kinds of games and toys available, they play with them with great joy. Conversations are also of major importance, a lot of these kids simply search for an adult’s attention and devotion. Another important part of the program is the shared time in worship and prayer. The staff members sing and pray with the kids and teenagers and tell them about a life with Christ. At the end of the ghetto ministry they receive a warm meal. Once a month, as a special highlight, there is some meat and lemonade for everyone. We also celebrate special holidays like Christmas with the kids.

Share time in worship and prayer. The staff members sing and pray with the children and teenagers and tell them about a life with Christ.

Manage children by teaching them proper hygiene such as washing hands after visiting the toilet, brushing teeth and never play in dirty sewage water trenches.

At the end of the ghetto ministry they receive a warm meal. Once a month, as a special highlight, there is some meat and lemonade for everyone.
